LANCE PGS-1-LAN - PATTERN GRADING SCALE RULER

An initial pattern is made in only one size. However, to produce clothing that fits various body types and sizes, the individual components of the initial pattern must be increased or decreased to create a complete range of sizes. The process of resizing the initial pattern is called "Grading." Each company determines its own grade specifications for each size, and size specifications vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Grading must be done with great care and accuracy. To properly fit a pattern to a range of sizes, each pattern piece needs to be systematically increased or decreased. This process proportionately increases or decreases the size of a pattern, while maintaining shape, fit, balance and scale. It's important to remember that grading only makes a shape larger or smaller and isn't intended to change a shape. Grading also assumes that individuals of different sizes are proportionately different.

Pattern Shifting is an advanced process commonly used to grade patterns in the fashion industry. Patter shifting requires a custom-designed ruler called a Pattern Grading Scale (this package contains our #PGS-1-LAN Pattern Grading Scale). It allows you to increase or decrease the overall dimensions of a pattern by moving the ruler up and down and left and right in line with the corresponding measurements. This permits redrawing the outline of the pattern to fit the new size.

Pattern shifting is the process of increasing/decreasing the overall dimensions of a pattern by moving it a measured distance up and down / left and right, using a specially designed ruler (PGS-1-LAN) to redraw the outline, producing the same results as the cut-and-spread method.

Tiny Measurements!

Trouble with fractions? This is the tool for you. I know where to find these measurements on sewing machines, but adding specific little seam allowances to patterns and making small adjustments can be a pain on certain rulers. I bought this with a Tailor's square and two different lengths of French curves. Even though I live on the East Coast, with shipping all of these essential drafting tools were cheaper on here than getting them from Amazon, Mood or even my local sewing spots.
